Booking Through Thursday: Quirky

Sometimes I find eccentric characters quirky and fun, other times I find them too unbelievable and annoying. What are some of the more outrageous characters you’ve read, and how do you feel about them?

I love the quirky characters that authors come up with as they are my usual source of laughter throughout a book, but I had to really think about which were the most outrageous. I think the most outrageous character I’ve ever read is Grandma Mazzerfrom the Stephanie Plumm series by Janet Evanovich.  She’s hysterical in as she “helps” Stephanie catch her FTA’s and as she is constantly on the prowl for those “hotties.”  Another one of my favorites is Hamlet from Something’s Rotten in the Thursday Next series.  Fforde does a great job capturing the craziness that is Hamlet–the whining, the passion, the inability to act, the fine line between sanity and madness.  And finally, I’ve got to say Rosie the elephant in Water for Elephants. Although an elephant, Gruen creates this character who loves lemonade, cries out in pain when abused, and loves those who show her care and respect.

Quirky characters really don’t ever annoy me as I usually just end up laughing at them in the midst of a great story.

  1. Grandma is the first character to spring to mind in relation to the word “quirky”, but I’d forgotten Hamlet! And there’s Uncle Mycroft, too.
